Exclusive Interview - Laurie Foell

Laurie Foell plays Angie/Josie Russell
Via: Phone

When is your birthday?
10th of the 2nd 1968

Had you done any acting prior to Home and Away?
Yeah, I've done quite a bit. I worked on a mini series called Blue Murder, I worked on an Australian (something) called Russian Doll, I worked on New Zealand TV/Movie called Tiger Country, I worked on…
So quite a few movies
Yeah, Yeah, Lots.... All Saints as a guest episode
That would have been interesting....
Yep, I played a mum to a little boy who was very sick
Oh. How did that feel?
It's good and hard. It was kind of sad

What had been your one of your favourite storylines either with
Angie of Josie?

With Angie, as twisted at it was my favourite storyline was the one with Nick
With Josie, my favourite storyline was the Jesse the Josie the Marriage. I thought that was sad.

Who do you enjoy playing more, Angie or Josie?
They are both so different darling, Angie was just your mad physco and Josie I love because she is very human, makes mistakes and she tries really hard not to, so I think Josie is a more well rounded character. She is not as dramatic as Angie

Were you surprised at the huge following after Angie was killed off?
Yeah I was actually!

Do you miss working with Brett Hicks-Maittland and think like most fans that he should return
to the show?
eah I think he was great and...
How was it like acting with him? Was he a nice guy?
Yeah he was lovely. He's a lovely person and just came out of
NIDA, I think it was his first films.

Where do you think you're character is going to go once Ben Unwin leaves the show?
Will you miss working with him?
Yeah. I'll miss Ben lots because he's a good mate.

Any spoilers?
(laughs) Yeah I know, because I've asked that to other cast members and they
can't give then out as well. No darling, we can't, we get into big trouble.
We get big big trouble.

Hmmm… O.OK, wonder if you’re the stalker???
Well... well can't even tell you that!!

If you were the script writer for Home and Away, what would you give Josie next?

Um... I would give her a story that is related to the industry that she was in. Where she doesn't
want to go back to it but maybe she has to go back to get one of the girls out of it or
counselling young women or go there and get them out of the sex industry so I would do a storyline
around that

Are you similar in anyway to Josie Russell?
Yeah I am actually. We have some things in common.
(Laurie said something about being not a prostitute like Josie was previously (laughs) but I
couldn’t' write it word for word because she said it so quiet that the recorder
didn't catch what she said)
I don't think I've had as many big mistakes as she has had.
What we have in common is out love life and love for family and commitment to work.

You did really well on your wedding episode and you were fantastic! Did you enjoy
filming those scenes?

Yeah I did! Thanks

Were they emotional?
Yeah. It was a very emotional day and I was so happy for Josie to
finally get what she wanted because she really is a good person
underneath all of that. She had a bad stage with Marc but sometimes
adults do stuff like that but she’s a good person deep down and I was really happy that she could
marry the man she loves! So I thought that was really good!

Josie wore a short wedding dress the other night, what did you
think of it?

Um... Look I think it was appropriate for the character. I would never wear a wedding dress
like that but she's been around the block a few times so, she’s not going to walk
down the aisle in a long traditional white dress (something) it fits in with her character.

You are very popular among Home and Away fans. Do you get a lot of fan mail?
I do darling, I do which is really lovely. I always answer them but it takes me ages but I
always get back to it because I admire my fans. I am very busy though!

How do you feel about some of the clothes they give you to wear as Josie? Do you get a say
in what Josie wears?
Yeah. I'm half half about it. Some of the stuff I think is really great and the other stuff
I find is a bit funny!! Do you get what I mean?
I think I didn't have a clear idea when I started off the show how Josie was going to be,
so I couldn't really know what she was like

You had to get a new haircut and everything didn't you?
Yeah, she's a different type of person. She's kinda tough and a nice person as well.
She has lots of nice things about her.

When you left Home and Away, when Angie was killed
off, did you ever think you would have the chance to
appear on Home and Away
again?
No… Never. (Laughs) Never in a million years.
So were you approached by Channel Seven?
Yeah, look, they approached by about coming back for the Angie
ghost then stuff came out of that!!

If you weren’t on Home and Away, what do
you think you would be doing?
Well, I would love to, when I finish Home and Away, I’d love to
do a drama series.
You starred in something with Lyn Collingwood didn’t you?
Yeah, a play but I want to keep working on TV because I love TV and I love my family.

Do you think one day you might make it to Hollywood or want to)?
Um, yeah (laughs), probably when I’m about 50 though. No really I can imagine, you
know, going there when I’m about 50, 45, I don’t know. But I’m not going to go
there right now but yeah one day maybe!

What is it like knowing that some people have become famous through Home and Away?
Um, well, you can’t really think about it, because the people I am working with now are all
really lovely people so they don’t run around acting mad. So you don’t really think
about it, I mean I’m aware that acting is a long show like Melissa George…
Yeah, but the people I’m working with now are so lovely that you forget that their famous

When you were still in school, what did her teachers say about you on your report card?
That I was a very good student but I day dreamed too much (laughs)

Do you think one day you might make it to Hollywood or want to)?
Um, yeah (laughs), probably when I’m about 50 though. No really I can imagine, you know,
going there when I’m about 50, 45, I don’t know. But I’m not going to go there right now
but yeah one day maybe!

Who are her favourite actresses and actor (or who do you admire)?
Ah….well, I don’t think anybody could go past Cate BlanchettS
he’s just got a great personality

Who in the cast are you closest to or hang out off set?
Um, well we all hang out but not often because we work such long hours and see each
other so much it makes it a bit hard. I’m really friends with everyone. I hung out
with Lyn a lot because I was in a play with her, and I love Lyn Collingwood.
I went and visited Lynne McGranger when she was in the UK, doing a panto cause she’s a mate,
Kate’s a mate, Ada’s a mate um, Issy I love, you know, well we love each other a lot!

Which celebrity would you choose to be stranded with on a desert island?
Well I know I’d be asking for trouble but I’m gonna pick Ali G (laughs) he’ll keep me entertained and make everything about me

Who do you live with? Any Pets?
Yes! My little cat Hymie. Hymie is beautiful and is a little Devon Rex cat and he’s gorgeous.

What are your favourite fashion labels and why?
Um, I love (something hill), a Sydney label, beautiful clothes and not too expensive. More and more I like Sportsgirl. They have great jewellery and great stuff and what I can’t afford but would love to buy one day is Chanel.
Oh yes, it’s every girls dream!

Yep!

Where will you go shopping for clothes?
Pretty much those two, and I also have this beautiful dress by Alannah Hill. Yeah, she’s great!

Have you got any upcoming projects that we can we can look out for?
No. I’m working my life on Home and Away I have no time (laughs)

Might we be seeing you in the music industry one day releasing a single or album?
No! (Laughs)

Do you prefer studio or location filming?
Ah, well location when it’s not at Palm Beach!

Oh… so not at Palm Beach?

Yeah, like do you remember Josie’s’ house?

That was beautiful. That was a private house at Avalon.
At the moment we are filming a real estate storyline, so somewhere to do with real-estate.

As you become more experienced as an actor, does learning your lines become easier?
Yes!

Is there a special technique that you use or anything?

Just practice!

Will you be going to the Logies?
Yeah, well, I don’t know Jessica; I mean I think so because I am regular cast on Home and Away, but I’m not sure because we haven’t got our invitations yet!

Where will be the hottest place to be seen around town?
(Pause) Oh gosh! Well I don’t go out a lot because of work but look I don’t live far away from Bondi Junction so I’ll go there. I walk around there to see if there are any sales!

Jessica: Also, Good Luck for the future and nice talking to you

Laurie: Thank you
